Small glimpses of a more natural learning path as it unfolds in everyday family life.
These field notes are informal reflections from our family’s journey of growth and development as we learn and live beyond school.
They begin with everyday moments from our lives, but they rarely end there. They become the place where everyday life is explored through writing, and where the writing itself begins to shape how I see and live that life.
Rather than documenting lessons or following a curriculum, they explore the ways learning, development and childhood reveal themselves through curiosity, projects that evolve unexpectedly, conversations, experiments and the natural rhythms of family life.
They are as much a reflection of my own unfolding as they are of my family’s. The essays and these field notes continually shape one another. The writing changes how I see our lives, and our lives continually reshape what I go on to write. Together, they trace an ongoing process of questioning assumptions, noticing what I’d previously overlooked, and learning to trust childhood in new ways.
If you’re exploring life beyond school with your own family — or simply wondering whether there might be another way to understand children — I hope these reflections encourage you to look again.
Below you’ll find an evolving collection of these notes. Earlier pieces in the series were originally published under the title Home Ed Hacks, but they form part of the same ongoing Field Notes.
