Great piece! It recalls indigenous communities who understand that the role of elders is to help the children remember and live into their purpose. Malidoma Patrice Somé writes about this powerfully in his first book, Of Water and the Spirit.
Ooh lovely, thank you for the book recommendation, I will definitely check it out. We sure need to bring in some of that ancient wisdom, as we have strayed so very far from our authentic path with childrearing (and most other things!) I feel. I was thinking about indigenous and traditional communities at points when writing this, for example their joyful tribal dances that are not about technique but joy, togetherness and spirit. Thank you for reading, commenting and enriching the discussion.
Such a valuable conversation to be in! His second book, The Healing Wisdom of Africa, identifies the structures of healthy indigenous societies and you will find a lot that supports your intuitions.
