Knowing Yourself to Raise Them Freely
Why self-awareness matters more than ever as a home educating parent
One of the greatest gifts I’ve given myself—and by extension, my children—is the commitment to really know myself.
For me, that journey has been guided most powerfully through the lens of the Gene Keys and Human Design. These systems won’t speak to everyone (and they don’t have to), but for those of us drawn to them, they offer a deeply compassionate, symbolic map of the self—a mirror of our patterns, possibilities, and purpose.
My Gene Keys Life’s Work is Gene Key 40, which holds the shadow of Exhaustion and the gift of Resolve.
That shadow of exhaustion? It’s not just about overcommitting or over-giving (though that’s certainly part of it). It’s also about compromising our spirit—pouring our energy into work or roles that don’t allow us to breathe, to rest, to feel truly ourselves.
When I first contemplated this key, I could see its pattern running through so many seasons of my life. The relentless overdoing. The drive to be all things to all people. The inner belief that love is something you earn through self-sacrifice.
Even when I made a big external change—stepping away from a demanding career so I could be more present and conscious as a home educating parent—I later realised I had carried the same pattern into the next chapter. Taking on too much. Doing everything myself. Not asking for help.
But awareness isn’t a one-time fix.
It’s a lifelong practice of recognition.
This is why it’s called the Life’s Work—it’s something we live into, again and again.
And recently, I’ve realised there’s another side to that gift of Resolve: not just stepping away from the old patterns, but actively choosing to align with something that feeds my spirit. That’s what I’m doing now—building a body of work that reflects who I truly am. This work, which weaves together Human Design, Gene Keys, conscious parenting, and education, is not just fulfilling... it’s energising. I’m finally letting myself be nourished by something that feels aligned at a soul level.
“When you activate the 40th Gene Key at a higher frequency, exhaustion becomes a thing of the past. When your life force is aligned correctly, you will discover that there is a vast amount of energy available to you… Everything about this 40th Gene Key is about having boundaries, and in order to create boundaries you have to be able to deny other people access to your energy. You have to be able to say no.”
— Richard Rudd, The Gene Keys
This speaks so directly to my experience. When I uphold clear energetic boundaries—around time, relationships, work, expectations—there’s energy. Not endless energy, but right energy. Aligned energy. And the kind of presence I want to offer my daughters becomes available again.
This is what I want to share with other home educating parents:
We often walk this path because we want our children to grow up unburdened by the layers of conditioning we’re still working through ourselves. But unless we take time to really know ourselves—our patterns, needs, shadows, strengths—we risk unconsciously passing those same burdens on in subtler forms.
And perhaps the shadow I’ve described here—of overdoing, overgiving, overextending—resonates with you too. It’s a common pattern for many women in today’s world, especially mothers who are holding so much, spinning so many plates.
Whether you use the Gene Keys, Human Design, or some entirely different practice—what matters is finding a way to become conscious of yourself. To witness your own story with tenderness and clarity. Because we don’t need to be perfect for our children. But we do need to be present. And that starts with knowing who we are.
Know yourself.
Honour your energy.
That’s how we raise free children.
